For those of you who think working in movies is glamorous. A thread. By Marti King Young.
1. It isn't. If you're judging glamor by what you see on TV and red carpets, I hate to burst your bubble. See next tweet. 1/
I'm going to pass the acting right now and give you the nuts and bolts of it all. First of all, you have to get the greenlight and a studio to put up some money. Let's say you have it. NICE! 2/
What you don't realize is you have entire departments who get it made. Locations has to secure areas (and if you're in Atlanta nicely/politely fight with other productions that are currently filming) as well as get the money to secure permits. 3/
Then you have your art department who has to know what the look needs to be. Same with Set Dec. And props. 4/
you have to feed your people, so you have to arrange Craft Services for the snacks and Catering for the lunches/dinners. 5/
Your poor AD department has to schedule everything with every department. Why are AD's the way they are? BC the schedule is bonkers. Movie Star A can't fly in until Tuesday but she's supposed to start work on Tuesday however, Costumes needs a fitting so what happens? 6/
Either A decides she wants to make the fitting (yeah right) or Costume guru flies to HER for the fitting and dodges A's schedule. 7/
God help us if you have to have a wig. Hair and MakeUp are SO neglected and overlooked it's incredible. They make our people look AMAZING and if you think their hair looks great, chances are it's wig THAT THEY STYLED. HMUA are AMAZING. 8/
So now you're ready to roll and UH OH they have to run along a fence or something. Contracts says NO WAY. HELLO STUNT PEOPLE! Now they're in the fray. And let me tell you, Stunt people are ALSO vastly overlooked and underrated. Their attention to detail is incredible and 9/
also their attention to SAFETY. I've never seen a stunt crew I didn't like. They work their butts off so you can jump out o your seats bc you love the action. Next time you go to the movies, stay for the credits and read their names. They deserve it. 10/
Remember the AD team? Well, the producers just okay'd MovieStar to make a press junket in Seattle and said we can work around her schedule. Out goes the original schedule. Everything needs to be reworked. Locations needs new places (bc the old ones now can fall through)11/
So now it's reworked. The calendars in the office are changed. A new DOOD, a new one liner. And then: ANOTHER SCHEDULE change. Down come the calendars. PAs scramble. Office workers throw computers out windows. It's pandemonium. 12/
Basically to work in film you have to be ready to put out fires, spin plates, schedule on a dime, get along with other departments, and be okay with working hard all day long to throw your work into a trash can minutes after you hit print. 13/
That's not even shining a light on how Locations gets to the site before everyone else to open it up, and is the last to leave so they can close it. AND schedule port a potties (thank you locations for that btw) AND bug control... AND COVID crap now....14/
I'm saying this bc I would like everyone to, the next time they view a movie, please take the time to read the credits. All of us work our butts off so you can have an experience. I'm just asking to give those depts that respectful nod. And that is the end of my thread. <3
