This summer, I taught a intro to cw class marked as “low cost”. I didn’t assign textbooks. I didn’t know how much it helped some students until I actually taught the class. Did the same this sem for an intro class. here are some essays I have taught so far, all freely available.
The first chapter from @MiraPtacin's haunting book "The In-Betweens: The Spiritualists, Mediums, and Legends of Camp Etna" - a community of spiritualists in Maine. This chapter talks about a session where the author interacts with her deceased brother. https://buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/miraptacin/the-in-betweens-mira-ptacin-camp-etna-spiritualists
We had endless discussions about climate change, California fires, & the state of the world after reading Christina Nichol's beautiful essay "An Account of My Hut: I don’t want to live in a spaceship" https://nplusonemag.com/issue-31/essays/an-account-of-my-hut/
Though @ortile's essay "I Started Therapy So I Could Take Better Care Of Myself" is from '15 it felt suited for '20. This essay gave my students permission to speak about sadness, depression & the mess that is 2020. They felt their experience is valuable https://www.buzzfeed.com/mattortile/changing-the-water
This essay about a dog that eats a pie & the man who beats the dog for eating the pie & the woman who dumps that man is so sweet & sad & relatable that we wanted to talk about it for 150 mins. never date a man who beats a dog. @LisaLanserRose https://mailchi.mp/creativenonfiction/sunday-short-reads-092
"How Time Works" by Haley Swanson is astonishing: it compresses so much time, evokes so much. Several students in my class want to write an essay on this topic inspired by @haleyaswanson

We read "This Is How a Robin Drinks" by Joanna Brichetto: you really have to read this essay to fathom beautiful this essay is. It teaches us to slow down. Observe. Look at the world. Appreciate its beauty. https://mailchi.mp/creativenonfiction/sunday-short-reads-074
Read @KunkelTron essay "Backstories You’re Better Off Not Knowing" for the deft use of the second person, but be ready to laugh out loud. https://www.newyorker.com/humor/daily-shouts/backstories-youre-better-off-not-knowing
Chimamanda Adichie’s essay on coping with grief after losing her father is long, powerful, sad, very sad, unflinching, relentless, honest and raw. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/notes-on-grief/amp
