If you’re feeling conflicted about the election and being stuck with Trump or Biden, you’re not the only one. u2028u2028Wish you had another option but afraid voting third party is really a vote for (insert candidate here)? Let’s discuss.
A lot of people don’t feel like they can vote for Trump or Biden for a lot of reasons like
- history with Racism
- children in cages at the border
- sexual assault accusations
- or whatever dealbreaker box for you they both check off
Who else could you vote for?

If you are on left leaning side of the spectrum, consider the Green ticket Howie Hawkins ( @HowieHawkins) & Angela Walker ( @AngelaNWalker). u2028u2028

But isn’t a vote for third party really a vote for (insert Trump or Biden here)? u2028u2028No
A vote for Trump is a vote for Trump, Biden for Biden and so on. If you want to get technical, here& #39;s how to determine if your vote could impact which major party candidate wins the election

First determine if you live in a toss-up/swing state or solid red/blue state here: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/2020_elections_electoral_college_map.htmlu2028u2028
If">https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/20... your state is solid, it is nearly impossible that your vote will change who gets your state’s electoral votes. There are 39 solid states and 11 swing states.

Whoever gets the popular vote in your state gets all of the electoral votes for the state. That doesn’t mean that swing state voters can’t vote third party, but there is a chance their votes could impact which major party candidate gets the presidency. Consider that when voting.
But with so many states secured red or blue, how could a third party candidate win the presidency?
u2028u2028Well let’s be honest, they probably won’t. The last third party candidate to win the presidency was Abraham Lincoln.
However, there is still reason to vote for them.

If a third party candidate receives 5% of the popular vote, the party will qualify for public funding which legitimizes them as a third major party. If they reach 15% in polling, they’ll qualify for a podium on the debate stage. u2028u2028 https://ivn.us/2016/08/12/5-important-number-third-party-candidates-2016">https://ivn.us/2016/08/1...
It’s a long uphill battle, but those two accomplishments would help level the playing field to get us a better variety and quality of candidates in future elections. You might think it sounds impossible but its not.
Look at the Libertarian parties growth in recent elections:
2008: Bob Barr (0.40% of popular vote)u20282012: Gary Johnson (0.99% pop vote)u20282016: Gary Johnson (3.28% pop vote)u2028
If they make the same jump from 2016-2020 that they made in 2012-2016 they’ll be at 5.57%!

In 2016 Johnson almost hit the polling threshold for a podium on the debate stage. u2028 https://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/debates-clinton-trump-johnson-stein-226806u2028u2028

But Brandon, democracy is at stake?!u2028
Yes it is. Both parties are participating in voter suppression. Trump with his poll watchers (among other things) and Democrats by suing third parties off the ballot in PA and WI.
u2028u2028Getting more candidates/parties saves our democracy.

If you are sick of having two terrible options every presidential cycle, this is a practical way to use your vote to make future elections less terrible.
If you want to vote for one of the major party candidates you absolutely can and should. If you want to pursue a third party, you should also do that. Vote for who you want to vote for and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
And to be clear, this isn& #39;t meant to shame anyone out of voting for whoever they planned to vote for. Just correcting a lot of misinformation about voting that I hear thrown around constantly and prevents us from making real progress.
