One weird but necessary part of growing up is suddenly being able to notice the flaws in older family members. You realise that the auntie, uncle or even parent who you thought was perfect, actually isn’t. One day the naivety clears, and you clock who is actually problematic.
Sometimes it gets even weirder if you one day realise that the person you thought was ‘bad’ is actually good and the person you thought was ‘good’ is actually the troublesome one. An element of your childhood feels like a lie and you feel like you were so misled.
Or maybe you grew up and one day realised that the person you thought was ‘bad’ was actually totally misunderstood. Or maybe you realised that they were just traumatised and their experiences made them appear bad when really they were just hurting.
Growing up opens our eyes to so much about our family and family dynamics. The enlightenment can be intense and can even break bonds, change relationships or shift your outlook completely. Totally necessary though.
