The insistence to say what Trump did yesterday vis-a-vis the Proud Boys was "failing to rebuke white supremacists" is actively harmful. He didn't "fail to rebuke" the Proud Boys. He said they should stand by and that they were doing important work of fighting leftists.
There is no other honest way of reading the exchange: “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you what. Somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem. This is a left-wing problem.”
Donald Trump, asked to condemn an organization of white supramacist right-wing thugs instead announced himself unambiguously as one.
And if you phrase with Trump did as merely "not denouncing," you end up with the absurd charade described here: of Tim Scott and Mitch McConnell pretending that Trump just failed to say the right magic words. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/30/us/elections/republicans-trump-white-supremacy.html

Why won't Wade Hampton denounce the Red Shirts?
Hitler refuses to condemn the SA, the headline says.
