in 1976, a fan sent stevie a copy of "the song of rhiannon", written by evangeline walton in 1972 (one year before stevie wrote rhiannon).
stevie originally got the title rhiannon from a book called "triad", a novel about the supernatural. "the song of rhiannon" and the other 3 books that make up the series "mabinogion tetrology" are a retelling of an ancient collection of welsh myths.
these 4 books (written by evangeline walton) provided stevie with a lot of knowledge regarding the rhiannon myths. stevie decided she wanted to make a film about it. she approached the author who granted her the film rights to "mabinogion tetrology", aka the rhiannon film.
stevie was supposed to star in the movie. however she quickly realized she did not like acting.
in march 1978, stevie recorded several demos for the rhiannon soundtrack. some of the songs include "forsaken love", "maker of birds", "forest of the black roses" and "stay away", some of which can be found on youtube in demo form.
these songs were specifically not considered for 24 karat gold, because stevie was still intending on using them for the rhiannon project.

the rhiannon soundtrack was supposed to be stevie& #39;s first solo album. songs such as "kind of woman", "angel", "blue water", and "sorcerer" were originally intended to be used for the soundtrack. stevie said in 1979 that she wrote 22 songs in mind for the film.
in 1989, stevie said that 11 songs had been fully recorded and mixed, and that she hoped to release them one day and maybe tour with them. it is unknown whether they were recorded with a band, or just finished piano renditions.
in 2005, stevie wished to try again with her rhiannon project, and went to maui, hawaii to begin developing it further. but, her manager called her and asked her to fly to las vegas for an impromptu residency, which (once again) put the rhiannon project on hold.
"it could be a record. it could be a couple of records. it could be a miniseries, because the stories are fantastic. we started in that totally scholarly, you are a student of welsh mythology place."
earlier this year, stevie announced that she was going to pick up the rhiannon project again, but wasn& #39;t sure whether it was going to be an album, movie, a poetry book, or a combination of media.
"Last year I made a pitch to everybody that when this Fleetwood Mac tour is over, I’m taking next year off because I want to work on my Rhiannon book and movie. And I want to maybe work with some different producers…" (Rolling Stone)
in her recent interview with the la times, it was announced that the rhiannon project is now a television miniseries, and stevie signed a deal with a studio to make it. stevie does not want to directly star in the series, but is open to making cameos here and there.
"Nicks has no plans to play a major role in the miniseries, though she’s not opposed to the idea of “riding by on a white horse or something.” She won’t dish on her dream cast but says that Harry Styles “is definitely in the running.”

stevie said that she is still using the original songs (10 of them, to be exact) from the late 70& #39;s. "She has 10 songs that she’s never released, still on cassette tapes in a suitcase, set aside specifically for the project." (LA Times)
it is unknown whether stevie will rerecord the songs, or release the original "fully recorded and mixed" versions.
