first up: yes, it is a song from taylor swift folklore. & Obviously i have Feelings about “this is me trying,” have you met me? but no. instead i ask you to consider:

hoax, which is. god it is so painfully a grantaire song. “my smoking gun, my eclipsed sun”? “my winless fight”?

but the real kicker, the boy that makes this really painful... is the “je crois à toi” parallel. “your faithless love’s the only hoax i believe in”? yeah, that’s about how grantaire feels about enjolras and his Cause. does he think they can win? no, not really.

he *knows* how this story is going to end. he knows they’re not going to make it. and yet—and yet—

he can’t help but believe in this hopeless cause. in enjolras’ undaunted spirit, in his pointless, squandered, unwavering, *unreturned* love for his country and its people.
