Not only has the Trump Admin refused to consult with Congress, but they have yet to indicate if they will even set a refugee admissions goal for the new fiscal year, which starts tomorrow. This administration will seemingly stop at nothing to stop this life-saving program. https://twitter.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1311307857070108673
The refugee act of 1980 created the US's modern refugee program, which has resulted in 3 million+ people resettled to a new home here in the US. When Congress passed that act they perhaps never would have guessed that a @POTUS might refuse to set a goal, or lower it to 0.
There are 80 million people forcibly displaced, with 1.4 million refugees in need of resettlement, yet the US is resettling fewer refugees than ever before. The US must be a robust participant in refugee protection & lead the way in solutions that protect refugee's #HumanRights.
International solidarity is needed in the best of times. Now, it is an absolute must. @amnestyusa is calling on @POTUS to set a higher refugee admissions goal for the new fiscal year, starting tomorrow, right now. #RefugeesWelcome
In addition to expanding resettlement, the U.S. should invest in other admission pathways, including humanitarian programs, family reunification, and co-sponsorship programs.
For refugees who remain in displacement, the U.S. should increase support of intl humanitarian programs that enhance refugees’ self-reliance through educational opportunities, job & livelihood programs, focus on women’s & children’s unique needs, & other independence measures.
