I received many questions today from our technology partners on the SilverLake partnership and whether this represents a strategic shift for @Mubadala. Below thread is my thoughts and reflections 👇🏼
Our relationship with SilverLake was built through joint investments in Endeavor and more recently - Waymo and Jio. This was foundational to the partnership we announced today.
We built dialogue and trust with the outstanding SilverLake team. This took time and effort on both sides. They also invested in the relationship and took a long-term view on what we can build together.
Technology is central to Mubadala’s investment and growth strategy over the next decade. We made that clear through Mubadala Capital’s investments and partnerships and establishing presence in leading technology ecosystems in the world – San Francisco, London, and Beijing.
We also established @hub71ad in Abu Dhabi to support technology companies that want to expand into the UAE and GCC region. This is about connecting Abu Dhabi with the main technology hubs around the world.
The partnership with SilverLake is both a continuation of our strategy and also a strong signal that we want to partner with the best in the world. The strategy is to -
1) Establish long-term and trust-based partnerships with the best out there – SilverLake, Softbank, Sequoia, Hillhouse, Iconiq, Dragoneer, etc. and
2) Build direct investment capabilities through exceptional teams that are embedded in these technology centers around the world and are working closely with our partners. We support them as they support us. We want to find and back the most outstanding technology companies.
We also partner with seed and early stage funds in the US, Europe, China, and MENA. This is a critical part of our strategy in technology and ventures.
We invest as early as seed rounds and are able to do later stage investments as we have recently done in Jio. This gives us signal and insight into how technology is shaping the world around us. Our seed program is also important for us.
More important than all this, this is about the founders we want to partner with and support. We want to be consistent partners to them and we expect them to also be consistent with us.
We want to play offense with the winners and support them with Mubadala’s scale, resources, network, access and capital. We want to invest in great companies that we can help make amazing.
We can provide them with access to one of the world’s largest industrial assets as potential customers. We can provide access and resources across the world. We can evaluate thoughtful follow-on capital to the winning companies. We recently showed this with @RecursionPharma
Fundamentals change very fast in tech and there will be cycles. But tech will only go up in the long-run. And Mubadala is in it for the long-term. And the partnership with SilverLake today is an important proof point in our journey.
