3 years ago I was now downloading the locations of the voting locations of the Catalan independence referendum, as the websites that listed them were taken offline (and duplicated) constantly. As a foreigner I couldn& #39;t vote, but was still ready to go and give whichever support.
The day of the vote itself my parents arrived in BCN. I went to get them at the airport in the morning and waited at the arrival hall of El Prat with a just-bought estelada. Until that meant trouble with the Guardia Civil, who were extremely nervous.
Back in BCN I went with my parents to look at the outside of several polling stations. Voters had to be neutral, but I didn& #39;t. Thanks to my Estelada with me in the street several people that saw the beating images coming in from the news, asked me if I knew where they could vote.
I remember a girl working on the Mc Donald& #39;s of Passeig de Gràcia running behind me to ask where and till what time she could vote. Surreal moments. Luckily I had my maps on the phone. I could make a small difference.
That rainy day was one of the most absurd days in my life, but what many Catalans will agree, a day that gave a feeling that people can change things. It makes me angry that the beaters of that day got rewarded with a better salary, an unseen cynism from Madrid.
But what makes me even more angry is that independentist parties don& #39;t do anything with the victory of that day. They are preferring posts, nice wages and posh restaurants in Madrid, over the dignity that the people showed that day. And that& #39;s an utter shame.
