hello, just coming on here to say that the absolute outrage over rapists is completely warranted, but I see a lot of people suggesting “just kill the rapists”, and I want to make a thread of reasons why I think that won’t work for rape:

1. The death penalty was sentenced for the convicts of the Nirbhaya’s case. However, this has not proven to be effective in decreasing these crimes. The death penalty call was more so a result of the mass outrage than actual justice prevailing.

2. The rapists are more likely to murder/injure the victim to avoid any complaints being lodged later on.

3. It can also cause an increase in caste based violence. There will be a target on the weaker sections of our society because they are less likely to make a complaint due to lack of voice and less likely to go further due to their inability to afford expensive law procedures.

4. It can force victims to not come out with their complaints if a family member is abusing them, and they are forced to adhere to societal and familial pressures.

5. Lastly, likening rape to death is not a nice notion because you’re reducing the victim’s sexuality to being the only aspect making their life worth living. This is another consequence of patriarchy. ~

~ A person’s (in particular, a woman’s) honour is held with incredibly high regard, and their “loss” of it through sexual assault costs them a place in society.
