Influenced by my family physician colleagues, I've adopted a "comprehensive generalist" approach to research, engaging in a variety of projects that examine the social and ethical aspects of health professional education and practice. Here's a sampling of new research: https://twitter.com/McMasterFamMed/status/1311334996846604288
With an interdisciplinary team of FPs, obstetricians and midwives, I'm conducting a @CIHR_IRSC funded study to examine counselling & decision-making about cannabis use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. We're just finishing up two systematic reviews and are almost ready to recruit!
I'm part of @RISE_McMaster which is a multi-platform, multi-professional project designed to improve the ability of health and social care providers to recognize and respond to family violence.
Another ongoing @CIHR_IRSC project co-led with @julia_abelson examines the emerging role of the "patient partner" in health systems decision-making. Here I'm interested in the ethical implications of how patients are engaged. e.g. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0266462319000382
This summer I got to work with an amazing group of primary care clinician leaders ( @primarycare2025) to think about system reform in the wake of rapidly-implemented Covid-19 reforms. https://www.primarycare2025.com/
I'm also generally interested in the aspects of health professional practice that generate and deplete compassion, and have explored this topic in the context of end-of-life care with @3wishesproject_ . https://doi.org/10.1177/0269216320929538
Clearly the sub-specialist "find your niche" approach to research is not for me.... So glad to be in a department that provides the opportunity to embrace the rich texture and complexity of primary care research and practice. @McMasterFamMed
