I want to go back to the race and justice segment of last night's debate for a little parsing, fact-checking and context because it all went by in such a blur.
First of all, Trump must have thought he was running against Hillary Clinton again? There's no record of Joe Biden having used the term "superpredator" but Trump made the claim three separate times. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/live-blog/first-presidential-debate-trump-biden-n1241282/ncrd1241486#liveBlogHeader
Trump then said "I'm letting people out of jail now," by which he means prison and that's true. The sentencing reforms in the first step act led directly to the release of more than 5,000 federal prisoners and should lead to shorter prison terms for thousands of people each year.
As for Trump's claims about the 94 Crime bill, dealt with those in brief here: https://twitter.com/Jamiles/status/1311124049536397313
Biden for his part, hedged on policing, conceding there was "systemic injustice in law enforcement" but also subscribing to the "bad apples" theory of policing, without, as most do not, finishing the aphorism. https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/saying-about-bad-apples
Rather than propose any policy, or co-sign the House Democrats bill, Biden promised to convene police and civil rights leaders at the White House to "work this out", failing to even mention the Obama admin's 21st century policing task force, which was essentially, exactly that.
Then Trump goes after Biden's record saying that from 09-16 there was "tremendous division" citing Ferguson— an uprising to which the Obama administration responded by conducting the most scathing and influential patterns and practices investigation in the history of the DoJ...
So that seems like not really a shot at Obama/Biden admin for mishandling so much as a dog-whistle for riots/protests/scary people in the streets.
Then he cites Oakland "look what happened in Oakland!" and TBH I have no idea what this means, if anyone has a guess pls share?

Trump was in the midst of a pivot to gun violence, but gun violence was on a long downward slope in Oakland and the whole bay area for the entire Obama presidency. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2019/jun/03/gun-violence-bay-area-drop-30-percent-why-investigation
Trump then says Baltimore, where "what happened frankly was more violent than what I'm even seeing now." Which makes no sense. Homicide rates in the city went up in 2015 and have remained steady since then, and through his presidency.
