Jlo& #39;s role in the music industry: how she has taken advantage of black female artists and black culture despite not belonging to it. A THREAD.
As most of you may know, Jlo began her career as an actress and as a backup dancer for stars like Janet Jackson in the early 90s. It wasn& #39;t until the Selena movie came out when she rose the stardom.
Even tho she had a privileged education in the arts, she was at the time focusing only on acting because that was the only thing she was capable of.
After Mariah Carey broke up with Tommy Mottola in 1997, he started looking for someone to compete with her for revenge. Sadly he couldn’t find someone as taletend as Mariah, so he thought launching a Latin artist in the middle of the Latin music movement was a great idea.
That was the moment when Mottola and other Sony people met JLo and proposed her to be labeled as a mixture of black and Latin culture artist. She, a 30 year old woman, consciously agreed knowing that she wasn’t part of the black community.
After JLo signed her music contract, Sony started working on her first album. Her debut single "If You Had My Love” was a commercial success, but it didn’t take too long for people to discover that something was wrong with the song.
The song was completely ripped off from Chante Moore, an R&B artist. And the song not only was stolen from Chante, it also included her vocals an more vocals from an unknown singer.
The list of songs in which she stole vocals from other unknown/upcoming black artists goes on. Another example is Jlo’s "Feeling so good", a song whose chorus was completely sang by another unknown artist.
In 2001 Jlo released "Play”, a song written by Christina Milian. However, JLo forgot to record her own vocals for the song and used Christina’s vocals from the demo in the final version.
In 2000, Mariah was working on a big project while she was still with Sony. She left the company and then signed with Virgin Records to release Glitter. In a desperate attempt to sabotage Mariah& #39;s career, Mottola got the songs she was working on and Jlo agreed to steal the idea
In the track she stole from Mariah’s album, JLo also used more vocals from a another unknown singer:
It was very clear the kind of entertainer JLo was. Her sales began to fall and Mottola changed the direction of her music to a more urban sound. That’s when she dropped I’m Real Remix ft. Ja Rule who was also working with Mariah on Glitter. The song was written and sung by Ashanti
To make it worse, JLo said the n word in the I& #39;m Real Remix while being completely conscious that she wasn’t part of the black community
As I said before, the list goes on. Here are more examples of JLo ripping off songs and vocals from Ashanti, Natasha Ramos and unknown singers:
Amerie is another victim. She was working on "1 thing" and her record company didn’t want to release it because they were planning to give it to JLo. Amerie and her producer leaked the song and sent it to radio. It became a HUGE hit and defeated the devil
All of this is sad because JLo and her producers/record company not only stole the music and vocals, they also did everything to disappear those black female artists from the music scene +
Amerie, Ashanti, Natasha Ramos and Christina Milian were banned from radios, TV shows, award shows, etc... The unknown singers were tricked, the records companies used to promise them a music contract if they gave her vocals to JLo. AND JLO WAS AWARE OF THIS.
End of the thread. Please show support to black female artists because this industry is still racist and misogynist. Never take advantage of other people, specially if you are privileged
