if you're not hard of hearing but people laugh at you for being 'deaf': first of all, that's really mean of them but also, give this a read 👇🏼

if you relate to these experiences you may have auditory processing disorder (APD)
- you ask people to repeat themselves 300 times a day

- your TV is mega loud but you still can't hear it

- song lyrics? no thanks i'll just make up my own words that sound vaguely similar
- you can hear electricity buzzing in the wall

- phone calls stress you out - your connection is fine and the volume is loud but you still don't understand what the other person is saying

- group conversations make you zone out because trying to keep up is too exhausting
- no subtitles? lmao good luck.

- you heard this all the time as a child: "there's nothing wrong with your ears, you just need to pay attention"

- your friends all laugh at your apparent 'deafness' (you laugh along but worry you're actually losing your hearing)
- finding your way around and following directions is a nightmare

- *is introduced to a bunch of people* sorry, i don't know ANY of your names even though you told me them less than 6 minutes ago

- forgot your shopping list? don't expect to remember anything on it. at all.
- you worry that you seem like a bigot when you don't understand someone's accent

- more than one step in instructions means you've forgotten the first step by the time you've been told the last one

- going out makes you nervous because there's just Too Much noise everywhere
- i'm going to pretend i heard you and hope that my reaction isn't wildly inappropriate to what you just said

- volume control? never heard of her.

- "can you repeat that?" again and again until the other person gets bored and decides it "doesn't matter"
- audiologists get annoyed because "your hearing is fine" and they see you as a time waster

- background noise seems to bother you far more than everyone else

- "what is that noise?" = either something really obvious or something obscure no one else can hear
- them: "you missed out one section"
you: "what's a stout one section?" (or similar mishearings - this example happened to me)

- going to clubs or bars is a waste of time, you just get confused

- school was/is horrible because you couldn't follow instructions like everyone else
if you relate to a bunch of these i recommend you look into being assessed for auditory processing disorder - it can be a very confusing & isolating condition to have, but it was a massive relief when i finally found out about it. it's good to know i'm not the only one :)
