ELECTION THREAD

In my full-time job, I am the Budget Advocacy Director at @SafeandJustUSA. In that role, I work a lot on state ballot measures and help implement some upon passage. Every election I provide my take on them for readers/followers to engage on them before voting.
#Prop14: YES
This statewide bond will help provide grants for stem cell research on important health issues like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

#Prop15: YES
Reassess large commercial properties so residential property isn’t bearing the brunt of the tax burden. Exempts small biz & Ag.
#Prop16: YES
Restore affirmative action programs for education. There is no such thing as undoing centuries of racial injustice by picking yourself up by the bootstraps.

#Prop17: YES
Allows people on parole the right to vote. Restoring people’s rights reduces recidivism.
#Prop18: YES
Allows 17 year olds the right to vote if they will be 18 by the general election. Encourage civic participation early.

#Prop19: YES
Provides property tax breaks and relief for seniors and people affected by wildfires.
#Prop20: NO!
Despite the lowest crime levels in modern history, some law enforcement would rather turn back the clock and lock up more people instead of providing access to mental health care and alternatives to incarceration. This will pump more $$ into law enforcement budgets.
#Prop21: YES
Local governments have been hindered in their ability to provide rent control protections because of the 1995 Costa-Hawkins Act. This would allow cities to apply rent control protections to most housing over 15 years old. Important to preventing displacement.
#Prop22: NO!
Don’t buy what rideshare companies are trying to sell you. Their model exploits workers by depriving them of benefits and other protections. They pass the cost of their “innovation” on to the rest of us when the government ultimately has to provide those benefits!
#Prop23: NO OPINION
I have not made up my mind.

#Prop24: YES
Expands your rights as consumers to determine how businesses share your private/personal information when its captured during transactions. Creates new state regs and oversight, is an important safeguard against fraud.
#Prop25: YES
Eliminate the use of wealth-based metrics & cash bail in determining pretrial release conditions and move to a system based on public safety and the least restrictive means to secure the defendants’ return to court.
