A rambling thread on We Made It Director’s Cut: background things I’ve noticed.

A few disclaimers: a lot of this has (probably) been pointed out, I’m not going to go deep into the actual story line bc at this point we all know, and I’m not going to talk abt super commonly-talked abt things from it (hello, wheel in the back). Also I’m a larrie.

So starting off, in wmi, when L is standing in front of Alfie’s wheel (idk if that’s what people call it but that’s how I think of it) u can see a game that is Pink Panther-themed. Pink Panther is abt a fumbling detective who is trying to find the lost pink panther diamond.

I think that’s kind of funny bc we’re all detectives (fbi larries wear that title proudly) when it comes to him, and he knows it. He likes it actually. And even though everyone thinks the pink panther detective is going to fail, he ends up solving the case and being right. +

Larries have known what’s been coming for awhile bc he has told us, bc he expects us to dig deeper. (I’m not just referencing larry here, but Larries are the ones who consistently look for clues so they’re who I’m crediting) so- pink panther game in the back.

Also in the back when L is in front of the wheel, on the other side there’s a game called “Temple of Tickets.” I would assume this is referencing that people do anything to seek tickets# sales, thus they “worship” and “sacrifice” for the temple of tickets. +

this could be referencing either the artists or their label. This presence of cash, gambling, and money actually exists throughout the whole video. I certainly think that’s intentional- money is everything, money is power, money is the driving force of the “gods above.”+

Which makes it all the more meaningful the L is the one who was able to take the money and escape from the head guy (S*mon). in the end, he has all the power.

Ok next thing: the scenes in wmi seem to be 1) the lovers’ first meeting, 2) Joe dealing with S, and 3) the lovers being conflicted over what to do next. This kind of seems to be L’s timeline, and how he struggles with S and H and eveything but just wants to get out. BUT the

underlying song is wmi- I would have thought that would be at the end to show he got through it all, but it’s not, it’s the first song. So I think it shows that no matter how bleak it got, and he knew he would get out, even if Joe doesn’t. Also, I love this SS L looks so good

Then of course “all I ask is for loyalty”- yeah. that’s self explanatory. It goes into dlibyh after that, which fits. L drives the getaway car- he’s the leader.

They’re stealing cash for S- they’re giving S money, and money = power, so they’re giving S power. There are five people in the car, and one questioned S with a silhouette like Z. 1D. Also, I love the license plate, it’s a gem. FY5I- fck you Si, FXT- the X factor.

also- dlibyh is another interesting song choice for this sequence. It feels like L’s talking to Joe. And this is when S clues in bc Joe took the money- he took to power- right from under S ‘s nose, and by the time S realized it was too late.

And then KMM (my fave song off walls). You have the lone motorcycle (another often talked abt symbol), of course, but I thought the red lighting around L was more interesting. It looks like it frames him exactly like the wheel did, except now he’s no longer surrounded by +

slot machines and money symbols, and he’s actually performing by himself. This is after taking the power (even if S is catching on) but he’s closer to freedom then he was before. Also it’s in his color-red.

Also in KMM, the lovers find each other again. It’s clear they never stopped loving each other, and were still together, despite S making it hard for them. This is just before Joe makes the leap away from S, which makes this meeting bittersweet, but they find each other+

Not long after he comes back to the surface from being in the water and they’re free. Joe made his jump alone, but his love was there to support him after he got through it. Then they walk into the sunset together.

I’d like to point out that throughout the video, they each wear one ring on the ring finger on their RIGHT hand. right, like they couldn’t wear one on their left.

Then, of course, L finds and takes the money. He takes the POWER. and now he’s away from S with S helpless to do anything abt it. This is emphasized by the chords of walls playing in the back- “I stand taller than them all.” He was smart, he played the game his way, and he won.

And finally, it closes with otb in the back. which- yeah. yeah we know what that song stands for.

That’s all I have for now, and I really barely scratched the surface. It’s a masterpiece of a video, and there’s SO MUCH to unpack. I’d love to do a clothing analysis at some point, and I didn’t talk abt the writing on the walls in many scenes specifically dlibyh.

All in all, Louis won, he’s so fucking smart, and I’m so fucking proud of him. he seems to be close to getting to the surface even if he is still underwater. wmi mv directors cut deserves all the awards.
