Anyone who knows a nurse, knows they are some of the most caring & compassionate people. Most nurses I know are condemning what they heard on the video. This isn't about one or a few nurses, though they should be held accountable for their words & actions.

There was an entire system that empowered these people to say what they said & do what they did. I doubt it was the first time they made derogatory & dehumanizing comments. Who called them out? Who held them accountable? Did they only face consequences bc they got caught?
Health practitioners hold a lot of power over people. Their knowledge & training put them into a place of the highest responsibility. And it should not be up to patients to advocate for themselves when in a position of vulnerability.
Joyce's story brought up a lot of memories when my Mother was in 3 different hospitals in the same year. She had to be her own best advocate bc we couldn't be there all the time.
You shouldn't have to worry that the safety & wellbeing of a loved one rests on whose on shift that day or night. But, I do remember the nights when I left her feeling relieved or worried depending on who was working.
We were fortunate. I had connections & was able to navigate the complicated health system. Mom spoke up abt her treatment. We had many mtgs w hospital managers to correct things. Not all families have this & care shouldn't depend on who can best speak for themselves.
And no one. NO ONE. Should have to turn to or rely on recording their last moments or catch nurses on camera to call for basic dignity & decency in medical care.
