Last year I was reprimanded by my editors because I said in a private newsroom meeting to discuss the election that the defining arc would be that the Republican Party is a white nationalist group under Trump and the question is if (or how) the Dem nominee pushes back.
I had to promise my editors (who didn’t want to upset any conservatives) that I’d never discuss issues like that again or propose that framing in a newsroom setting. Basically, I couldn’t talk about the basic contours of political news even tho that was ostensibly my job.
This is to say, I’m extremely unsurprised that “neutral news media” is bungling this election coverage with mewling, equivocating framing even worse than it did 2016 and can’t describe a white nationalist movement — and the political party responsible for it — in plain English.
Here’s a good thread on what the newspaper headlines look like, which is what I’m referring to in the “neutral” news media. https://twitter.com/pmmcc/status/1311288871951400960">https://twitter.com/pmmcc/sta...
