Ok, after some sleep I’ve reached a resolution on last night’s #Debates2020 .

The consensus on media, on social media, even texts from friends is it was a disaster. It was a step back for discourse and the country. Poor reflection on our democracy.

I say: no

Last night was a reflection of who we are and what we’ve become as a culture.

Did you not like what you saw in the mirror?

A top-rated TV outs couples on an island to see how long before the cheat on each other.

Our TV went from I❤️Lucy and Ed Sullivan to Samantha Bee.

Listen to Top 40 radio. You think a country which allows Cardi B and other porn stars mainstream platforms merits a civil debate?

Look at the vitriol with which we attack one another on social media. Look at the glee when friendships end over political difference.

We embrace cancel culture. We embrace de facto racism in the name of being an “anti racists”.

People spent the weekend attack a working mother of 7 because she adopted kids from Haiti. #AmyConeyBarrett

What debate did you expect, America?

Last night wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t polite. It wasn’t civil.

And that is who we’ve become as a culture.

When a couple eating dinner peacefully has their table overturned because someone is mad about “justice”- and the mayor says nothing- what do you expect from a debate?

Last night reflected America. And if you thought it was ugly, uncivil, etc then you need to ask yourself how you created last night.

Because you did. In your choices. Manners. Rhetoric. Discourse. Behavior. You got the debate you deserved, America.
