Trump's approach and aesthetic are really jarring to people who didn't grow up in working class backgrounds or certain urban neighborhoods. Upper middle class commentators still don't get it. Trump's politics may be vile, but his debate tactics appeal to people.
While pundits call Trump's speech and approach to debate unprecedented and shocking, none of it is shocking if you spent time removed from educated elite bubbles. Trump retains popularity because he is talking like how a lot of people talk. Effete decorum means little to him.
Watching the debate, putting politics and lies aside - Trump lies a lot - it's hard to think Biden actually *won* anything, yet Twitter seems to think he did. A regular, apolitical person watching that spectacle would've thought Trump absolutely steamrolled doddering Biden.
People make the mistake of calling Trump senile or mocking him for his cognitive decline. He's not senile. He's a venal liar who knows nothing about policy and never cares to. But he's not senile and he's not slow.
