I meet a lot of internationals new in Sweden, meaning I get some exclusive insight into how amateurs deal with cold climate. Here comes some advice:
1. Sure, good clothing is good but it's what you are doing that makes the difference. Going for a brisk walk will keep you much warmer than sitting down.
2. Sure, a good winter jacket is key, but it's not gonna work fully if you wear it open.
Sure, you may not lose all your heat through the head (quoting @guardian on this one), but you will still feel significantly warmer wearing a beanie.
4. Acrylics is crap. Invest in some real wool, ie the expensive rather than the snug-looking stuff.
5. Polyester can be a good material, in the form of 'fleece'.
6. Gloves may look dressier than mittens, but they will let your fingers freeze to death.
7. A good winter coat is not only warm but also keeps you dry.
8. Have a smartphone? Don't be selfish and forgot about your best friends. The battery may die because of the cold.
9) Keeping fruit in your bag? Beware of spontaneous nicecream!
10) Make sure you know what sort of event you are taking part in and dress accordingly. Your new dress may be lovely but you won't care during that second hour in a playpark watching your friends' children play.
11) Run your frozen fingers in COLD water when you get back inside. Hot water = painful.
12) Wellies (unless lined wellies) are useless in freezing temperatures.
