Thread: #Covid has shone a bright light on inequalities that have existed for far too long. We can no longer look away and ignore. As we continue through this crisis now is the time to explore what kind of world do we want to create? What kind of economy do we want to make?
We know it is possible to have an economy that works for everyone. An economy that prioritises people, wellbeing and the planet. Covid has shown us that through #ClapForCarers, supporting vulnerable neighbours and recognising the work of #Keyworkers. #CaringEconomyNow
So after everything we have been through and the difficult times that lie ahead with a #SecondWave, further #Lockdowns and a #Recession do we really want to go back to business as usual? #CaringEconomyNow
Business as usual means going back to branding keyworkers as ‘unskilled’. The same keyworkers who have been the unsung heroes in this pandemic. Providing critical services on low pay and insecure contracts. #Nurses, #Shelf-stackers, #Cleaners and #DeliveryDrivers.
Business as usual also means supporting an economy that fails to value and invest in what actually matters. We will all require care at some point in our lives so why don’t we have an economy that centres around this? #CaringEconomyNow
If we are to move forward and create an economy that works for everyone. We need a vision of an economy that includes everyone. #CaringEconomyNow #WBGCommission
Because #Covid has shown that this crisis has not impacted everyone equally. While we may all be weathering the same storm, we are in drastically different boats. Inequality is deeply embedded in our society, and it requires bold, concerted action to eliminate it.
So, our report #CaringEconomyNow is a call to action. The report lays out the what, the why and the how we can design an economy where the wellbeing of individuals, communities and the planet is at its centre. #CaringEconomyNow #WBGCommission
It is possible to have an economy that prioritises people. We have seen this with government intervention during this crisis. #WBGCommission #CaringEconomyNow
Governments across the four nations have chosen to put people’s health first with restrictions but have protected income through the #Furlough scheme and ban on housing evictions. #CaringEconomyNow #WBGCommission
This is what we mean by a #CaringEconomyNow. It is an economy that values care, both paid and unpaid, as the activity that nurtures us all; an economy which ensures that no-one faces discrimination, violence, or poverty, and in which no-one is left behind, or pushed behind.
We are calling on #Governmnets, #Businesses, #Cooperatives, #SocialEnterprises, #Charities and #Community organisations to engages with the finding of our report and support our pressing call for a #CaringEconomyNow https://wbg.org.uk/commission/
