Assessing Frank Lampard [Thread]
15 months after his appointment, it’s clear that there’s still major work to be done for Chelsea’s Head Coach.
What does he need to improve? Can he lead the club to success? Let’s begin...

First and foremost, the circumstances and excuses of last season are no longer relevant. There’s no cushion for Frank anymore. This is Chelsea and all normal expectations apply.
The transfer ban is no more. Eden Hazard is long gone. Significant financial backing has been given.

One of the most glaring issues with Chelsea right now is the lack of a clear style. After 15 months there’s still only glimpses of Lampard’s patterns of play. It’s only natural to expect us to be much further along.

Compare Sarri’s first game at Chelsea to his last, and you’ll see a vast improvement in understanding. Do the same for Lampard, and you’ll struggle to find a style that has progressed at the expected rate.
The squad we have now is set up perfectly for Lampard. A DM is the only missing piece, which will then give him his perfect team. Will one player really make all the difference, or do the tactics need tweaking as well?

The defence has been a major weak point for Lampard, largely due to a lack of quality options.
Where he doesn’t lack quality is defensive midfield, which is an area that teams have found all too easy to get through. Far too many gaps have appeared.

Lampard has really struggled to find his perfect defensive setup. You’d be hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t think the options he has should be doing a more than sufficient job.
Tactically there has to be improvement there, especially if Rice can’t be attained.

N’Golo Kante was continually rushed back from injury last season which only exacerbated the issue. A domino effect was set in play.
Similarly this season, Mason Mount already looks heavily fatigued after just 5 games.

Lampard has to manage the minutes of his squad much better, especially in a season which will be more congested than we’ve ever seen before.
Those are currently some of the main concerns with Frank Lampard. All need sorting, but should there be an element of patience?

The squad is essentially in pre-season mode. There’s been no time for most of the new signings to settle in and gel with the team. That does take a while, but we should soon be seeing improvements. It won’t be an excuse that will suffice for very long.

The way Lampard has man managed players has been exceptional at times. Pulisic thrived after having a period out of the team. CHO has earned his place in a similar way. Christensen improved for a while last season after Lampard’s comments.

It’s a very good skill to possess. Frank seems to know his squad well and how to motivate each of them to perform and work hard for their places. That’s invaluable and the signings will only increase competition.

Frank Lampard has the respect of the football world. He’s one of the main reasons why so many players want to join us. They’re convinced by the project, and the thought of playing under him.
We’ve always had money, but Frank has brought more attraction.

There’s clear ways for Lampard to improve, and in some cases it needs to be very soon.
Tactically is where he needs most work. The midfield cannot continue to be set up how it is. Significant changes and clear instructions are required.

He also shouldn’t only be judged when he has the perfect squad fully fit. It’s his job to find solutions to problems, and he won’t always have everyone available.
Lampard has the makings of a world class manager, but perhaps not a world class coach.
It would be wise for him to lean on his coaching team. Anthony Barry joining was a promising sign that Frank recognised help was needed.

Calls of Lampard out are extremely premature, but similarly a lack of criticism is born out of bias.
There’s work to be done, but there’s still hope and belief that he will improve the situation. He’s Super Frank after all.
