Herd immunity (community immunity) is not a strategy. It is the process describing that not everyone in the population needs to be immunised before an epidemic recedes. It is at the heart of any vaccination campaign, as vaccines are generally not indicated for everyone.

Herd immunity is what keeps >200 respiratory viruses in check and makes influenza pandemic lineages (e.g. 1918, 1957, 1968, 2009) go endemic. Reaching community immunisation primarily through vaccination can reduce morbidity and mortality significantly.

Herd immunity is largely misunderstood including by many scientists. Acknowledging its existence does not imply letting COVID19 'rip through the population'. Conversely, denying 'herd immunity' is akin to drawing plans for a big bridge whilst dismissing gravity.
