So, it has been a great first month for my column, Criterion Crunch Time over at @InSessionFilm! I wrote on four movies that are leaving the @criterionchannl at the end of the month, which is today! Short thread incoming with links!
First, I took on the great Orson Welles' THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS. I got to talk about the horrific studio involvement and what could have been. Still a great movie though! https://insessionfilm.com/criterion-crunch-time-the-magnificent-ambersons/
Next, I made good on my promise to focus on women directors and directors of color with I AM NOT A WITCH. There, we discuss the power of fear paired with comedy in a masterful first film by Rungano Nyoni https://insessionfilm.com/criterion-crunch-time-i-am-not-a-witch/
Moving forward, I took advantage of my column to watch a movie starring Isabelle Huppert, LOULOU. This is one of many movies directed by Maurice Pialet that are leaving the service today! https://insessionfilm.com/criterion-crunch-time-loulou/
And finally, I watched the revisionist western DEVIL'S DOORWAY. Certainly problematic, given that a white man is playing the Native main character. But given that, a good film that is largely respectful of its protagonist. https://insessionfilm.com/criterion-crunch-time-devils-doorway/
And that's it! I would love it if you checked out these movies and followed along here. Keep a watch here for four more movies in October that are leaving the service for good!
