PSA for anyone wondering what us academics are doing with our time right now. I’m going to list for you what I needed to do last year compared to this year per lecture:

2019.
Step 1: week before lecture go through the slides and update
Step 2: deliver the lecture

1/N
2/N

2020.
Step 1: break last years lectures into two 20min blocks.
Step 2: narrate both 20 min session onto PowerPoint.
Step 3: repeat step 2 numerous times because were scientists and not actors so we make mistake and get very anxious about that.
3/N

Step 4: convert the PowerPoint files to mp4s
Step 5: also create ‘handouts’ for the student from the ppt file by converting it to a pdf.
Step 6: devise a pre-lecture activity for the students
Step 7: devise a post-lecture activity for the students
4/N

Step 8: fill in a form per lecture to include ILos, info on pre and post lecture activities, links and references already listed within the lecture.
Step 9: upload mp4s, ‘handouts’, and forms to a crappy online site that takes approx 30 mins per lecture.
5/N
Step 10: attend an online session at the end of the week to answer student questions about the lectures and activities.

I estimate the workload has gone from approximately 1.5 to about 7-8 hours per lecture.

never worked harder to get things ready for teaching next week.
6/N

And don’t even get me started on how much work is going into creating a safe environment to run in-person practical classes.
7/N

So can we at least wait till the teaching starts and you see what has been done to give you the best learning environment given the circumstances (pandemic etc) before we start even thinking about tuition fee cuts.
8/N
And then tell me which of my kids, who I’ve practically been ignoring for the part 6 months to work on this, I should stop feeding to accommodate the pay cut the tuition reduction would cause (ok slight exaggeration here, but hopefully you take my point )
9/N....finally an apology for all the typos and grammatical errors that are probably in this thread....https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😳" title="Errötetes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Errötetes Gesicht">
