IS vs AQ in Afghanistan, a thread.
1/4
The rift between AQ/Taliban and IS can be seen opening with Zawahiri's reprimand of Zarqawi. In a letter, Zawahiri unfavorably compared Zarqawi's management of the jihad in Iraq to Mullah Muhammad Omar's management of the Taliban (without naming him).

To Zawahiri, Omar's inflexible stance on narcotics and shirk had been too costly to popular support to be worthwhile. When America invaded it made narcotics and shirk easier and this dampened enthusiasm for the Taliban.

After Muhammad Omar died, shirk and narcotics were permitted in an effort to appease, this was in line with Zawahiri's favor for compromise. In the fact the Taliban in 2017 went so far as to fight IS for stopping the drug trade.

Now the Taliban has asserted a creed which emphasizes close ties with Russia, Iran, China and America (the four big enemies of Islam). These nations *all* support the Taliban primarily as a counter to IS because the latter poses a threat to their borders and their sovereignty
