Today’s discussion. All politicians are different. Different in that we all have our personalities & styles. I’ll use myself as an eg. injustice makes me angry so I express my anger readily. I am a straight-talker. Once I decide there is a problem to fix I don’t stop until it is.
Also I read people and their intentions quite well. All these aspects of my personality have helped tremendously in my job. I do not profess perfection, like all humans, I am aware of my flaws, some I’ve accepted because they’re useful and others I am working on.
Just a point: what I am discussing is personality and styles of politicians nothing like else. Some are quite and measured. That’s one style and if a particularly determined person, it is quite effective. My colleague Samantha Graham is one such person.
The point I am making is that there is no cookie cuter model of who a politician should be in personality. I choose authenticity, being who I am. It is being honest. Don’t expect your politicians to be robots & all behave in the same way. That would be presenting you a falsehood.
I often see critique of colleagues being “unlikeable.” Why not judge a person on their work first? Is s/he effective in their job? Yes. Corrupt? No. If you so wish & it matters to you, you can also consider their personalities. But don’t write a person off only on personality.
Not everyone has charm as a trait, but they are good at their jobs
Not everyone is quiet & measured as a trait, but their good at their jobs
Not everyone is tough, straight-talking, colorful language (
), but they are good at their job.
See the point I’m making?

Oh, and one last point: likeability is often expected more of women than men. And that likeability is behind docile, feminine (what the f that means) be quite and soft. I’m not about that. And I know many of the great women I work with are not either.
We are here to do a job and do it well. Dimming our lights, making ourselves small to make that those that hate strong, vocal, assertive, straight-talking women. You’re just going to have to deal, I’m afraid. And to those who do support & celebrate strong women, merci beaucoup
