2021 can have an entire month of innuendo puns, as a treat https://twitter.com/bootstheory/status/1311193450100846594?s=19
Uh oh, we have rival competing standards!

Great, so a three point six day period would be a decimonth, that sounds reasonable https://twitter.com/NiklasFec/status/1311194462064869376?s=19
I've just realized that I should be using the ordinal rather than the cardinal forms of the months. My apologies.

Traditionalists may prefer that we not lose touch with heritage etymologies! To them, I say:

Januember
Februember
Martember
Apriember
Mayember
Junember
Julember
Auguember
September
Octember
November
December
Right, so basically we just abolish the imperial "day" and "week" and just use decimonths instead of both

(I believe the millimonth will be an entirely reasonable replacement for the hour) https://twitter.com/trochee/status/1311196338785144832?s=19
I mean you jest but like Portuguese actually almost does this

A highly reasonable alternative proposal!

I suppose Ember would be the first month of the year 0, which is either our best estimate of the year of the Big Bang or alternatively a round metal year contained in a vacuum chamber in France https://twitter.com/P_H_Lee/status/1311197015699718146?s=19
Normal brain: I love it when shitposts turn out to be a real thing that languages do
Galaxy brain: really, it's English that has the shitpost behaviour here https://twitter.com/1Man0Name/status/1311199084712210432?s=19
oh no i have been giving the joke proposals such intense superlatives that any actual superlative i give this Actually Highly Reasonable system is going to come across as ironic isn't it https://twitter.com/lexanesirac/status/1311200380781498369?s=19
Just in case you weren't around the last time we talked about cursèd numbers around here: https://twitter.com/GretchenAMcC/status/1277824138149847040?s=19
I would genuinely love to see the rival alternative to the entire metric system but in base-12 https://twitter.com/bergmayer/status/1311201382532349952?s=19

The only reason days of the week are learnable in most European languages is that half of them are cognate with each other, it must be utterly mystifying to enter this system as an adult https://twitter.com/Quandtuniverse/status/1311202197498077184?s=19
It's really interesting to me that several of these systems: have exceptions around weekends, and also start the numbering with Monday but it's #2 and there's no "firstday" https://twitter.com/Sakzor/status/1311202269782630400?s=19
All of the days are kinds of Saturday except Friday, fair enough https://twitter.com/futuraprime/status/1311200065692762113?s=19

Previously on time + number words:

Minute comes from "pars minuta prima" (1st small part of the hour)

Which was divided into 60, the "pars minuta secunda" (2nd small part, whence "second")

And THAT could also go into 60, the "pars minuta tertia" (we used to have "thirds"!)
The "seconds" etymology is something we looked up while making the "time" episode of @lingthusiasm, which you'd probably enjoy if you liked this thread! https://twitter.com/lingthusiasm/status/943992880078737409
