Baby Atsumu and Osamu just entwined around each other as they sleep. Their parents have tried to make them sleep apart but over the course of the night they end up gravitating towards each other and the parents find them curled around each other in the morning.
Atsumu and Osamu (aged 3) both have a knack for finding good food and both have ferocious appetites but everytime Osamu cries Atsumu readily gives up his food to his brother and happily watches him eat.
Miya twins aged 7 play volleyball with each other and when their mother announces dinner Osamu drops the ball and runs inside but Atsumu keeps practicing his bumps by himself. He’s learned that Osamu never stays behind with him when it’s dinner time but he expected that anyway.
In middle school Atsumu says he wants to play Osamu’s position as setter and Osamu shrugs and tosses the ball to him saying “then give me your pudding tonight” and it’s as easy as that. Atsumu becomes the regular setter in their team and Osamu replaces him as the spiker.
In high school Osamu finally confesses to Atsumu that he doesn’t want to go pro with him, but wants to open up his own restaurant and it’s the first time they both experience heartbreak. Broken hearts and bruised fists and days of not talking to each other and barely eating.
Atsumu notices Osamu barely eating and his heart breaks just a bit more because nothing has ever stopped his brother from eating, not even the broken arm when they were five and he fell off the tree in their back yard. Atsumu had to spoon feed him all three meals.
Atsumu grudgingly prepares a meal that he refuses to admit is any less stellar than Osamu’s own cooking and places the food near his bed. He kicks Osamu in the shin and says “Eat.” Osamu doesn’t eat until Atsumu brings a second pair of chopsticks and eats from the same bowl.
They never say ‘sorry’ to each other for that fight. Because they’re sorry that they chose their own paths in life and they each knew that they would always have each other’s backs, even if not on the court. They never brought that fight up again.
But Atsumu was always the first taste tester for Osamu’s new dishes and Osamu was always the first to spike or receive one of Atsumu’s new serves. Atsumu helped design Osamu’s shop logo with Kita’s help and Osamu packed three bentos for Atsumu’s first away game.
They somehow manage to keep up and compete with each other although their paths in life diverged. It goes on for years and years. Who got married first, who had kids first, who said happy birthday first.
They don’t know this but Kiyoomi and Rintarou have pictures of them sleeping side by side, pinkies intertwined and identical lines of drool down their faces.
They still gravitate towards each other after all these years despite life trying to keep them apart.
