This fills me with sadness.

He was my wife’s favorite singer from childhood, so I booked him to make an appearance at her surprise birthday party.

She used to love how on his variety show, he’d have a talk with the audience, then improvise a song from what they said https://twitter.com/reno30/status/1311145819148488704
We had a whole thing worked out. No one would know he was there. I was gonna assemble the guests, tell them that he was her favorite, and in a misguided effort to be romantic I would tell them I intended to sing “Hard to be Humble”

Then of course, I’d launch into it and suck.
But then he’d chime in from the back “Hey, how ‘bout I take a swing at that?”

He’d emerge from the crowd and of course the audience would lose it.
His agent had been adamant, he would sing four songs and then leave. So I was grateful that when he arrived, he was up for my little stunt intro.

He handled it beautifully and of course everyone went nuts.
He absolutely crushed his four songs, not even the slightest bit rusty from his heyday, but then...

He just kept playing.
Played a lot of his hits, told great stories about Elvis, charmed the relatives, was just an incredible entertainer.

And then he did it.

He had a little back and forth with the crowd, and made up a song about everyone on the spot.
It thrilled my wife and is, to this day, one of her most treasured memories. Can’t ever be topped.

He was a great artist and is a beautiful soul.

Thanks for gracing us with your music and your presence.
