why you should put your pronouns on your account, a thread by a non-binary person
i am mainly making this thread because i’m continuing to see a lot of my cisgender mutuals not put their pronouns on their accounts, and it’s pretty frustrating. hope this thread educated all of u as to why it is important to put your pronouns on your account!
1: what does it mean to be cisgender?

a cisgender person is somebody who identifies by their gender that they were assigned at birth; they aren’t trans
2: what does it mean to be cishet?

a lot of people are confused by this term so i just wanna clear it up real fast. being cishet means you are cisgender and heterosexual!
3: why do people put their pronouns on their account?

trans people put their pronouns on their account so that they don’t get misgendered by their followers. it makes lots of people (myself included) feel safe knowing that their pronouns are easily visible on their account
4: well, i’m cisgender, why should i put my pronouns on my account?

cisgender people often put their pronouns of their accounts to be a good trans ally! transgender people get harassed a lot online because they put their pronouns on their account, so by you being cisgender -
- and putting your pronouns on your account, it helps normalise the action of putting your pronouns on your account, and transphobes will slowly stop harassing trans people for it.

also, it makes some trans people feel safe seeing cis people have their pronouns on their -
- account, because then they know that there a lot of people out there who do support them! :)

(people will also know how to address you if you put your pronouns on your account!)
5: can i put “s/h” for “she/her” and “h/h” for “he/him”?

if you are cisgender, DO NOT DO THIS! only do this if you are trans! some trans people feel unsafe having their pronouns on their account, so the will use this instead. these abbreviations can stand for -
- anything, not just your pronouns, so it’s important to not do this if you are cis!
6: do all trans people HAVE to put their pronouns on their account?

NO! some trans people cannot put their pronouns on their account for their own online safety. ◇, ◈, and 🔶 are symbols that many trans people use to show that they cannot put their pronouns -
- on their account, so if you see somebody with these symbols, DO NOT pressure them into putting their pronouns on their account!
7: but but but my aesthetic :(((

get over it. i don’t give a fuck abt ur aesthetic.
8: where should i put my pronouns?

anywhere on your account where people will easily be able to see it. some common places people put their pronouns are their bios and locations.
9: can i put my pronouns in a special font?

NO. i cannot stress this enough. when you type anything in a special font, this is how text-to-speech picks it up. not only is it ableist, but some people with different types of phones might not be able to -
- see the fonts, meaning they won’t be able to see your pronouns!
10: can i use special symbols between my pronouns?

according to this one thread i saw on twitter, no, please don’t! it makes it harder for dyslexic people to read your pronouns. (cont. in next tweet)
DO:
✅ they/them
✅ they / them
✅ THEY / THEM
✅ they ! them etc.

DON’T:
🚫 THEY%THEM
🚫 THEY!THEM
🚫 they#them etc.
also! celebrities/influencers just bcos you’re famous, doesn’t mean you don’t have to put your pronouns on your account aswell!

here’s a few examples of some influencers who have put their pronouns in their accounts :)
that’s the end of the thread! hope this helps my cisgender followers understand why it’s so important for you to put your pronouns on your account! thank u for reading, have an amazing day :)
