I hope a lot of Howard Twitter got a chance to watch and really internalize that Girlfriends episode about Maya’s wedding. Joan was out of line for a bunch of reasons, but most importantly, the commentary on classism is really applicable

A lot of y’all romanticize hood-culture, aesthetics, and lifestyles, yet judge black people who are still on the block. It’s distasteful and rather weird.

Joan thought she was doing Maya a favor by exposing her to the finer things in life. That’s a whole ass savior complex...who said Maya needed Joan to save her? That mindset is classist and kind’ve racist.

Both those notions, Joans complex and a romanticization of good culture and aesthetics, contribute to the stigmatization of black folk with less access. Re-read everything from the comma.
