The only women whose beauty & attractiveness are always questioned & made a topic of debate by colorist & anti-black people (particularly black men) are dark skinned black women. They did it with Serena Williams, Lupita Nyong’o, Bria Myles, and now Issa Rae. Shameful. https://twitter.com/fredericoo11/status/1310945266971930633
I don’t care about what racist and colorist non-black people have to say about black people, so intra-racially speaking, black people need to have serious conversations about internalized racism which includes colorism, featurism and texturism. All inter-connected issues.
The fact that several people find these women attractive & desirable offends the sensibilities of colorists and racists who have been conditioned to inherently find them undesirable or less attractive primarily because they’re dark skinned and have ‘thicker’ African features.
And no the point isn’t to say that they all have ‘thicker’ African features. I’m aware that Issa Rae for example doesn’t fall into that category. The point is ‘thin’ or ‘thick’, these women’s desirability is always debated or rejected primarily because they’re dark skinned.
Then you have those with ‘thicker’ African features who will experience featurism more than those with ‘thinner’ African features. Overall, anti-blackness is what drives this urge within colorists & racists, and black people in particular need to start having these conversations.
Here’s a very good and informative scholarly article on featurism and the Afrocentric effect. I made a thread with some excerpts from it because I know a lot of folks on this app don’t like to read. The link to the article is also there. https://twitter.com/JordanSumbu/status/1286988741605617664
