so a lot of people didn't know this, so I'll share; the song Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day was written by Billie Joe in 2002, he cites it as being the most 'autobiographical' song he's ever written. It documents the grief of his fathers passing of cancer, aged 10.
he originally intended for the track to feature on the album Shenanigans, but found it too painful to record - so it was pushed back for release on American Idiot in 2004. This is perhaps why it's sound and story is very different to the rest of the album.
it has since been linked to September 11, Hurricane Katrina and other disasters, but the song's music video depicts a couple broken apart by the Iraq War, which was intended to convey the song's central theme of loss.
Billie has said many times how much he hates what it has become as a meme on the internet, and wishes it would stop. He has tried to make light of the pain it causes him and how uncomfortable it is, by joking that he wished he'd written "Shut the F*** Up When October Begins."
It was Green Day's second top 10 single, and American Idiot was one of the biggest, top selling albums of the Millennium, which went on to win a Grammy.
The song resonated with so many people. Here's a very emotional performance from NYC in 2012; where you can see the impact of the song on him first hand. Please do share the heartfelt, truthful lyrics of the song and not a meme this week. x
