Picking Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY).
First DPOY was 1983.

This thread will pick a DPOY each year (1950-1982) and re-pick actual DPOYs (1983-2020).

For my picking/re-picking of MVPs, see this thread: https://twitter.com/grisingTRS/status/1258450633092296705
DPOY criteria:

1) Team DRtg
IMO, this is the best D stat. But it's a team stat.
Individual DRtg relies heavily on team DRtg.

2) DWS
DWS is calculated based on team DRtg.
Pre-1974, DWS is sketchy bc it uses assists as proxy for steals

3) DBPM
Post-1974 stat

4) BLK, STL
Post-74
DPOY criteria:

5) I prioritize rim protection above perimeter D. I'm convinced that rim protectors make more of an impact on D. Also, pre-1974 DWS overrates guards with high assists.

So most DPOYs will be big men, often the center who anchored D of team with league's best DRtg.
1950 DPOY: George Mikan (1)

Kind of in the dark with this one because we don't have DRtg or even rebounds or minutes played.

But I choose Mikan: He led NBA in DWS (5.8), and his Lakers were second in NBA in points allowed. Lakers went 51-17 in regular seasons and won champ.
1951 DPOY: Mikan (2)

Mikan led league in DWS (7.4), 48% more than 2nd place (5.0), teammate Vern Mikkelsen.

Lakers led league in points allowed per game by a big margin (77.4), with 2nd-best team at 81.6 and NBA average at 84.1. Lakers also had the NBA's best record.
1952 DPOY: Mikan (3)

Mikan led in DWS (8.0).

Lakers led by NBA by a large margin in DRtg (79.3), far ahead of 2nd-best team (84.6) and NBA average (86.9).

Lakers had top four in DWS, including forwards Mikkelsen and Jim Pollard who finished tied for 2nd at 6.6 each.
1953 DPOY: Mikan (4)

Mikan led NBA in DWS with 6.9. Knicks' C Mel Hutchins was 2nd with 5.5.

Lakers led NBA in DRtg. Also had league's best record and won 4th champ in 5 years.
1954 DPOY: Mikan (5)

First close race for DPOY, as Mikan edged Dolph Schayes, the Nats' PF.

Mikan led in DWS with 6.6, just above Schayes' 6.3. (Mikan had fewer MP, so DWS/48 gap was wider between Mikan & Schayes.)

Nats led in DRtg 83.0 to 83.5 for Lakers.

Mikan retired.
1955 DPOY: Schayes (1)

Schayes had an all-around great season. He led in DWS (5.7). Bob Pettit (a good rebounder but not known as a defender) finished 2nd with 4.6.

Schayes' Nats led NBA in DRtg, had the best record, and won the champ. Nats' Earl Lloyd was 2nd in DWS/48.
1956 DPOY: Maurice Stokes (1)

Close race as Rookie of the Year Stokes edged Schayes.

Royals' PF Stokes led in DWS (5.9) with Schayes second at 4.9.

Royals led NBA in DRtg with 87.9, but Schayes' Nats were a very close second with 88.0.
1957 DPOY: Stokes (2)

Stokes led in DWS with 6.8.

Champion Celtics led in DRtg with 84.0, with Stokes' Royals second at 86.9. Celtics had 6 of top 8 in DWS, including rookies Bill Russell & Tom Heinsohn.

Russell played only 48 games but led in DWS/48 (.130 to Stokes' .118).
1958 DPOY: Russell (1)

MVP Russell set new DWS record with 7.7, ahead of Stokes at 5.0.

Celtics had big lead in DRtg 83.6, with Stokes' Royals second at 87.6. Celtics had 4 of top 6 in DWS.

Tragically, Stokes suffered a career-ending injury in the playoffs.
1959 DPOY: Russell (2)

Russell dominated defensively. He set new DWS record (8.2), far ahead of 2nd (5.4) and 3rd (4.1).

Celtics led in DRtg by a big margin, 84.5 to 89.2 (Nats) and NBA average (90.2).

Celtics had league's best record and won their second championship.
1960 DPOY: Russell (3)

Close race as Russell edged ROY/MVP Wilt Chamberlain.

Russell set new DWS record (8.9), but Wilt was close at 8.0.

Celtics led in DRtg at 84.9 with Wilt's Warriors at 86.8. NBA average 91.1.

Celtics had league's best record and won their third champ.
1961 DPOY: Russell (4)

MVP Russell dominated on D.

Russ set DWS record (11.3), almost twice second place (Wilt & Pettit at 6.5 each).

Celtics led in DRtg at 84.5, ahead of Pettit's Hawks (88.7), who added 3 good D players: Foust, Wilkens, Saudesberry.

Celtics won 4th champ.
1962 DPOY: Russell (5)

MVP Russ again dominated defensively.

Russ set another DWS record, 11.6, nearly twice 2nd-place Wilt's 6.0.

Celtics led in DRtg (85.1), far ahead of Nats in 2nd (91.6) and NBA average (93.6).

Celtics had best record and won 5th champ.
1963 DPOY: Russell (6)

MVP Russ dominated defensively.

Russ set new DWS record with 12.6, more than doubling Pettit in 2nd (5.8).

Celtics led in DRtg (87.4), 5.9/100 ahead of Hawks (93.3) & 8.5 ahead of NBA average!

Celtics had best record and won 6th champ.
1964 DPOY: Russell (7)

Peak Russell!

Russ set 7th-straight DWS record with 16.0! Wilt also had a great DWS with 10.6.

Celtics had best DRtg ever (83.8) relative to league average (94.6): 10.8 pts/100 better than ave! Wilt's Warriors very good with 88.6.

Celtics won 7th champ.
1965 DPOY: Russell (8)

MVP Russell dominates again.

Russ led in DWS (14.4), more than doubling teammate KC Jones (6.2) and Wilt (5.5).

Celtics led in DRtg (84.2) far above 2nd (91.2 for Hawks) and league average (93.6).

Celtics had best record and won 8th champ.
1966 DPOY: Russell (9)

Russ wins a closer race.

Russ led in DWS (11.4), but MVP Wilt had 8.3. KC Jones 3rd at 5.6.

Celtics led in Drtg (88.3), ahead of Wilt's 76ers (91.5) & league average (94.9).

76ers had best record. Celtics beat them & won 8th-straight champ (9th overall)
1967 DPOY: Russell (10)

Russell wins 10th in a row!

Russ led in DWS (9.2) for 10th-straight time, with MVP Wilt second at 7.0. Nate Thurmond 3rd (5.6).

Celtics led in DRtg (91.0); Thurmond's Warriors 2nd (93.1); Wilt's 76ers (93.9).

76ers beat Celtics & Warriors to win champ.
1968 DPOY: Wilt (1)

MVP Wilt breaks Russ's DPOY streak.

Wilt led in DWS (10.7), then Russ (7.8), Celtics' John Havlicek (4.9), & Thurmond (4.7).

76ers led in DRtg (91.2), breaking Celtics' (92.4) 11-year streak. Thurmond's Warrior 3rd (94.6).

Celtics win 10th champ.
1969 DPOY: Russell (11)

Russ wins last DPOY & champ before retiring.

Russ led in DWS (9.9) for 11th time. Next were MVP/ROY Wes Unseld, Havlicek (6.3), Thurmond (6.1), rookie Elvin Hayes (6.0), Wilt (5.3).

Celtics led in DRtg (89.1), then Unseld's Bullets & Hayes' Rockets.
1969 was first All-Defensive team
(DPOY began later, in 1983):

1st Team
Dave DeBusschere (Knicks PF)
Walt Frazier (Knicks PG)
Bill Russell (Celtics C)
Jerry Sloan (Bulls SG)
Nate Thurmond (Warriors C)
DPOYs, 1950-1969:

Early 1950s: Mikan (5) dominated, helped by Mikkelsen & Pollard.

1950s: Schayes (1) anchored Nats D. Stokes (2)/Royals good for 3 yrs.

1950s-1960s: Russell & Celtics.
Led by Wilt (1), Warriors-76ers also good on D, as were Hawks.

1969: New crop of D players.
1957-69 Celtics were the best defensive team ever. Mainly, that's bc of Russell, likely the best defender ever.

But KC Jones, Sanders, Havlicek also had good D reputations. And Heinsohn & Ramsey were scorers, but Celtics' D improved when they joined & worsened after they retired
Next great D team was the Knicks. C Willis Reed anchored them but was not great on D. His first 3 years, Knicks were bad on D & his DWS/48 was low.

But NYK added 2 great defenders: Frazier (1968) & DeBusschere (1969). Knicks lost C Bellamy (bad on D), allowing Reed to move to C.
1970 DPOY: Reed (1)

MVP Reed led in DWS (7.5), then Frazier (6.4), Hayes (6.2), Unseld (6.0), DeBusschere (5.8).

Knicks led in DRtg (92.4), far ahead of Hayes' Rockets (96.8), Unseld's Bullets (96.9), and NBA average (99.0).

Knicks had best record and won champ.
1971 DPOY: Frazier (1)

Hayes: 7.1, .094
Frazier: 6.7, .093

Bucks led in DRtg (93.1). Knicks just behind (93.3). MVP Kareem anchored Bucks' D, but was only 9th in DWS for some reason.
1972 DPOY: Wilt (2)

Close race.

Wilt led in DWS (7.9), with MVP Kareem close (7.1). (Wilt fewer MP, too.) C Tom Boerwinkle of Bulls had highest DWS/48 (.159).

Wilt's Lakers & Kareem's Bucks tied in DRtg (92.6). NBA average was 97.9.

Lakers: Best record, beat Bucks, won champ.
1973 DPOY: Dave Cowens (1)

MVP Cowens led in DWS (9.9). Next: teammate Paul Silas (7.6), Wilt & Kareem (7.5), Havlicek (7.2).

Cowens' Celtics led in DRtg (91.0) with Bucks (91.1) and Lakers (91.8) just behind.

Wilt 1st All-D. Cowens (& Kareem) didn't even make 2nd (Thurmond).
