SHMS presets Midterm Mental Health: keep reading for tips on how to stay calm and collected during this remote midterm week 💙🧡
Getting ZEN:
High stress levels are some of the biggest reasons that students underperform on their midterms and assessments in general. To combat this, you need to know how to RELAX. Try some of these tips to get yourself in the ZEN Zone:
- The Breathing Method: in for a 4, hold 7, out for 8
- Sleep Matters: between 7 and 9 hours of sleep at least 2 nights before your exam
- Exercise/Good Diet: Make sure to get in some physical activity and eat brain foods (fruits, veggies, and protein) for an energy boost!
Study Habits:
Many students struggle on their exams simply because they never learned how to properly study! Here are a few tips to help you study in the most efficient and effective ways:
- Breaks: take breaks (no longer than 20 minutes) to significantly improve studying and preparation for exams
- Positive Reinforcement: reward yourself to stay motivated
- Minimize Distractions: try to put yourself somewhere where you can be alone with limited distractions
And the biggest one:
- Know what you don’t know: often, students end up continuing to study things they already know because they don’t know what to focus on. Start by looking at your class’s lesson plan or your previous assessments.
Focus on filling in the gaps you missed!
Support Systems:
While not necessary, it can be extremely helpful to have a good support system to encourage you’re learning. It also helps to keep you on track and focused! Here are a few ways to build one:
- Accountability partner: designate either a member of your family or a friend to keep you accountable. Give them your plan and have them routinely check in to make sure you’re sticking to it
- Phone Reminders: use an app on your phone to lock the apps that distract you from work
- Timers: set timers on your phone to tell you when to switch subjects and when you should take breaks, so you stay on schedule
- Study with a Friend: working with classmates makes it easier to get help on things you don’t understand. Quiet company can make people more productive
