(1/12) @DDpan @BostonGlobe I really found this article incredibly interesting on how we can address this issue of ongoing racism within our communities in Massachusetts. In fact, if your looking for something to write to continue the conversation on the topic of racism, https://twitter.com/bostonglobe/status/1310968867439730688
(2/12) My hometown of Scituate, Massachusetts (aka "The Most Irish Town in America") has been grappling with this issue of racism and xenophobia for quite sometime in particularly within our public school system.
(3/12) My family and I moved to Scituate in 2017 after living in CT for 16 years. I struggled to come to grips with my sexuality for most of my life and I found it comfortable to come out to my family.
(4/12) During my Junior and Senior Year at Scituate HS— I was bullied and harassed by students to the point where I felt UNCOMFORTABLE and UNSAFE to be in the school environment, I have a learning disability and it altered my way of learning.
(5/12) Scituate High School administration did nothing to help but to sweep it under the rug
(6/12) Scituate PS is apart of METCO, a program that brings kids from inner cities in MA to our school district to achieve an education. Some Scituate students in past have posted pictures on social media of black face that sparked controversy within the town.
(7/12) Videos circulated of kids from Scituate saying the n-word repeatedly at a party. Just this week, SHS students posted on Instagram Accounts made to target and bully Asian-Americans who attend SPS.
(8/12) The response from the Administration— from the words of my brother, a junior at SHS, who believed the email that was sent out to the families and students was "high-assed" and "pushed under the rug"
(9/12) Today, another SHS Student posted a Racist and Homophobic tirade on Google Classroom to state what they believe is "The American Dream"
(10/12) I write this thread on Twitter hoping to get a follow up because at this point we need people to know what’s going on in our town and I’m willing to go all the way to get it out, from my experience and from others.
(11/12) As an SHS alum, I’m disappointed in the response, lack of action, and accountability with Scituate PS. Public school systems should NOT leave people behind or forgotten for who they are, but one that seriously educates it’s students on how important it is to accept others
(12/12) @DDpan @BostonGlobe Me, along with a few other students, would love to follow up with you if possible!
