why yamaguchi is criminally underrated and deserves more - a thread
this is gonna be so long im sorry https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="šŸ˜" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="šŸ™šŸ¼" title="Folded hands (mittelheller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands (mittelheller Hautton)">
so most peopleā€™s first impression of yamaguchi is as tsukkiā€™s sidekick - and that is how heā€™s first introduced, and we only really get to see him in relation to tsukki and not so much as a standalone character. his growth from there, from a seemingly unassuming and unobtrusive
sidekick to captain of a powerhouse schoolā€™s team and one of the most hardworking and resilient characters in the whole show is insanely impressive and i think we should talk about that more !! so letā€™s get into it https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="šŸ˜»" title="Grinsendes Katzengesicht mit herzfƶrmigen Augen" aria-label="Emoji: Grinsendes Katzengesicht mit herzfƶrmigen Augen">
the first bit i want to get into is his relationship with volleyball and his perception of strength. going along w the whole idea of him as a sidekick, one would assume that he would follow tsukkiā€™s lead and put up an apathetic front when it came to how important the sport is to
him, but yams wants to play volleyball-
wants to be good at it and he doesnā€™t pretend not to care. he wants very badly to be on par with the others and doesn& #39;t want to be left behind, and this fear of being sidelined probably has to do with how he was bullied when he was younger
his default emotion is fear- fear of being left out, fear of failure, fear of being weak. his reason for joining a sports club was to grow stronger, and his fixation with strength is also likely one of the big reasons why he looks up to tsukki. heā€™s self-aware too - he realises
early on that he alone doesnt have something special to contribute to the teamā€™s collective strength in the way the other first years do. instead of growing bitter or charging ahead blindly without a real plan, he does something that i think speaks volumes about who he is as a
character - he asks for help. if hinataā€™s special weapon is his jump, kageyamaā€™s is prodigal talent and tsukkiā€™s is height, then yamaguchi needs something that could keep match up to all that. he finds this weapon (this ā€˜spearā€™) in the jump serve, which he begins to learn from
from shimada and which he works very hard to master. but just deciding to learn the serve isnt a turning point for him in and of itself - he isnt particularly naturally athletic (compared to the rest of the characters) and so the serve isnt something he picks up with ease.
he fails to perform at the seijou match and then again against wakutani south. whatā€™s impressive here is that despite these failures being massively discouraging, despite putting a lot of hard work into it and it seemingly still not being enough - he doesnā€™t let any of that deter
him from getting what heā€™s truly after, and that& #39;s making himself integral to the team and proving his worth once and for all. he continues on, he keeps pushing himself, and he finally gets to have his moment in the second seijou match where he wins them five points in a row.
he makes it to the stage that everyone else is on and he shines, and THIS is his turning point. this is when he finally gains some confidence and this is when he begins to believe in his own abilities, finally begins to come into his own. his weapon isnā€™t really the jump serve -
itā€™s his tenacity, his stubborn determination to not be left behind. he wants to stand with the rest of them, and so he works his ass off and he gets there and he holds his own.
the next thing i wanted to get into were his friendships. heā€™s shown to be very loyal to tsukki, protective even. after oikawa targets tsukki during his serves, yamaguchi doesnt let that go and continues to react negatively to oikawa for a while after. he brags on tsukkiā€™s behalf
, is shown to cheer him on with impassioned gusto during matches and defends him. he looks up to him, sure, and he admires tsukki for being a lot of things that he isnā€™t and that he considers important (like being tall, ā€˜coolā€™, naturally athletic). itā€™s important to remember
though that yamaguchiā€™s loyalty does not make him a pushover. we see this front and centre when he actually properly yells at tsukki and gets all up in his face at the tokyo training camp and later after the shiratorizawa match. he isnā€™t afraid to assert
himself in this regard and imo this is a big part of why their friendship is as strong as it is. he gets along with the other first years too - him and hinata are p good friends, him and kageyama have a sort of mutual respect and heā€™s shown to have a soft spot for yachi
who i think he relates to the most. when it comes to kghn, heā€™s never envious or bitter about their talent or abilities - he believes they deserve their starting spots and is instead focused on bettering his own game and abilities.
means it likely isnt too hard for him to make everyone get along, while the confidence heā€™s gained with two years on the team under his belt also means he isnā€™t afraid of asserting himself and again, isnt a pushover. heā€™d be the best of the third years at playing mediator,
something which must be quite important considering how prone to conflict the other three are. my man really went from the only first year benchwarmer to captain of a powerhouse school and we do not talk about it enough !!
in conclusion, yamaguchi deserves more credit and we can talk about him without it having to be an add on or in relation to tsukki. heā€™s his own character w his own traits, one of the best arcs in the series and itā€™s abt time we acknowledge that https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="šŸ™šŸ¼" title="Folded hands (mittelheller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands (mittelheller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="ā—ļø" title="Rotes Ausrufezeichen" aria-label="Emoji: Rotes Ausrufezeichen">
