https://www.humblebundle.com/games/one-special-day-2020?partner=buzzyn Hey y'all, there's a special, one-day bundle over at Humble Bundle, and it's to benefit Special Effects. I care about this charity a lot, and I feel they deserve your support, plus a pretty decent selection of games. Please turn my share off and put it 1/
towards the charity, which aims to make gaming accessible to gamers with disabilities. While I'm lucky enough that my hearing impairment jumps around a lot, I realized just yesterday that some don't even know about it so I thought I'd share with you all. I have an issue with 2/
my eustachian tubes (the passage running from your sinuses to your ears) and when left unchecked, it can severely restrict my hearing. For anyone who's dealt with me in person when I'm dealing with it, it's pretty frustrating to talk to me. It's not much better on voice chats 3/
and I have to really crank up the volume on my headset. I recently had luck and my right ear opened up, but my left ear is still hearing at maybe 5% of normal hearing, leaving me functionally-deaf on that side. If you've watched my streams at all - particularly RDR2 - you've 4/
probably heard me complain about games that don't give you some visual compensation and leave everything to auditory cues (shout out to all the unfortunate settlers who got eaten by animals because I couldn't find where they were calling from). This is why. I don't really hear 5/
stereo or surround, sometimes up to 90% of the year. At present, I haven't had both ears functioning all year. So, I care about access to gaming for the disabled, from my fairly lucky position. I hope if you consider the bundle, you'll make sure to give the charity a solid 6/
share of your funds. I also wanted to shout out a game that does a really good job of not leaving the cues to a single sense: @hellogames - developers of No Man's Sky - seem to have this down to an art. Is there a predator chittering nearby? Icon and waypoint in the HUD. Is 7/
something shooting at me? HUD tells me where it came from, so I don't need to rely on surround audio. They combine cues all the time and seem to be very inclusive in my experience. Lastly, and not least, I wanted to thank my friends and family for being patient with my hearing 8/
when I know they get tired of me saying, "What was that?" But in this thread, specifically, the friends I game with seem to just innately know they pick up things that I don't. A-Chan always calls out when she hears zombies in the grass in @7DaystoDie because she knows I don't 9/
hear them until they're howling at the gates and wrecking our beautiful walls. She's not alone, she's just the first example that sprang to mind. So, thank you all for reading this far. Please consider getting this @humble bundle and supporting a really good cause. Thank you!
