this month has seen lots of conversations about suicide.
unfortunately, farmer suicide has not been widely discussed.
we can't claim to work towards suicide prevention without engaging farmer suicides in punjab and india.
here's a short thread:

farmer suicide is a complicated topic and it's something which has been an ongoing challenge for years.
it is something that goes beyond healthcare, requiring economic and social reforms to address core challenges.
even statistics are contested. https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/punjab-saw-one-farmer-suicide-a-day-in-2018-says-ncrb-grossly-underreported-claim-experts/story-sidixYYn5gBBSBwNm5DDVI.html

small steps to confront these challenges are ongoing, with people who have been bereaved by suicide leading the way.
from my conversations at Punjab Agricultural University, it's something that they are trying to resolve through local farming networks. https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2019/08/18/after-losing-father-activist-leads-fight-against-farmer-suicide/

the pandemic has exacerbated these challenges as COVID-19 is an exogenous shock which has led to increasingly uncertain economies and agricultural markets
this has, in turn, made life more difficult for a number of farmers: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/08/world/asia/india-coronavirus-farmer-suicides-lockdown.html

other efforts to support farmers are also underway in states around india, but we see the constant challenges to pilot programmes that either lose funding or change hands.
so much amassed knowledge has the potential to be lost: https://caravanmagazine.in/health/maharashtra-governments-efforts-to-provide-mental-health-care-amid-farmer-suicides

when we talk about suicide there are many narratives we need to challenges. we are often socialised into talking about suicide in certain ways.
@toymango provides a fantastic piece to encourage reflection and action points on what we can do! https://thecorrespondent.com/448/the-coronavirus-pandemic-is-triggering-suicides-heres-what-we-can-do-to-help/59308066048-b7e1e234

recently, farmers have been striking en masse in punjab and other states in reaction to ongoing maltreatment at the hands of the central government.
you can read this great piece by @AdityaMenon22 on how this has manifested: https://www.thequint.com/news/politics/punjab-singers-farmers-protest-narendra-modi-ranjit-bawa

targeting farmers in states like punjab exist in a history of exploitation and suppression, largely trying to quell sikh sovereignty.
@sikhsiyasat do a great job of outlining these points in this discussion which is in punjabi. https://sikhsiyasat.net/2020/09/28/farmers-struggle-on-agriculture-bills-laws-in-punjab-challenges-possibilities-bhai-ajmer-singh/

financial precariousness, lack of social supports, debt, pesticides, neoliberalism, hindutva, subordination + exploitation are all important aspects of the farmer suicide discussion which is the tip of the iceberg of a complex topic.
we can't think of 'health' in isolation.
