Thread about #LGBTQ “cure”:

Friends, tonight on @BBCSpotlightNI there are a bunch of us speaking about the long-term impact of 'healing prayer' and 'pastoral care' & even 'therapies' to cure us of being gay.

Many churches & prayer groups continue to prescribe such (1)

experiences to young men who are gay or bisexual. They say "Oh this isn't reparative therapy, it's just some pastoral support to help heal what's broken in the man."

It's almost always men. Such groups display a callous disregard for lesbian and bi women, and for straight (2)

women who are often manipulated into marriages that are more about presenting a straight face for a man than any ethical consideration of the life of the woman involved.

Tonight's episode is less about telling horror stories - although there are plenty - and more about (3)

appealing to people - and yes, parents - with power to be accountable for the abominable dereliction of duty.

Here's an important thing too.

Revealing this shit is nothing new. We have been speaking about this for Decades. Decades. Decades. (4)

May those involved in these harmful practices listen.
I wish them well, but not in these awful abuses.
Churches can be places of belonging.
Let them be so.
Let them also stop being so cowardly about the impact of their LGBTQI-denying ideologies. (End)
