We submitted a request last year for Arlington National Cemetery to correct the spelling of Seraph Young Ford's name on her headstone.
She and her husband now have a new headstone, and she was honored today in a ceremony with some descendants, Utah officials, White House staff, and a few of our team in attendance.
Seraph is now recoganized as one of the notable women buried in Arlington, as the first woman to vote under an equal suffrage law.
Our historian Rebekah Clark started researching Seraph almost 3 years ago, when we weren't even sure a photo of Seraph existed. We've been able to piece together more of her story since then—the story of an ordinary Utah woman who made history.
Her memory hasn't always gotten the recognition it deserves, but we're proud to help rectify that and honor the legacy of her historic vote, which affected not only Utahns but the rest of the country as well.
