I want to address #SoberOctober. Good idea, bad idea, scourge to the industry, month of tea sipping and folded hands in your lap? It’s none of these things. It’s a break for those who need a break. It’s a choice. And it doesn’t have to be one where you’re constrained to water.
There are some very good reasons to drink and some very good reasons to put the bottle down. Do what feels right. Americans drink too much. Yup, I said it. Even though it’s my job. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t drink. It means, for some of us, we need to slow down & recalibrate.
I needed that. It’s changed my life. See: https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2020/2/18/21136863/alcoholism-sober-curious-mindful-drinking. I still drink occasionally. Out of enjoyment, not out of desperation or necessity. Take what you need out of Sober October. Do it or don’t. Just don’t foist your skin on anyone else.
Does it hurt the industry? No, industry should offer choices. Distillers, brewers? Some have NA labels! If not, it’s no different than beer taking away sales from kombucha brewers. There is space for all here. #SoberOctober isn’t a boycott. It’s a lifeline for those who need it.
Hopefully, that answers some questions. But I’m always open for discussion. It just might be over a non-alcoholic cocktail for me.
