Why we worship Ficus religiosa or Sacred fig tree.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says, I am the Peepal tree (ashvattha) among the trees. Hence people consider it to be Lord Vishnu. It is said to be the abode of God and our ancestors.
It is a source of energy and eradicates negative vibes.

According to the puranas, lord Vishnu resides in the peepal tree except Saturday. People worship it on Saturday to get Shani Kripa.
The origin of peepal tree worship can be traced back to the times of Indus Valley Civilization (3000 BC - 1700 BC) in the Mohenjodaro city. Excavations are suggestive of the fact that even in those times; the Peepal tree was worshipped by Hindus.
Gautam Buddha reached nirvana meditating under a peepal tree.

Another popular belief is that Lord Krishna died under the Peepal tree.

There are a few legends, which suggest that Lord Vishnu was born under the peepal tree.
There are a couple of stories, which say that the tree is home to the trinity of Gods, the root being Brahma, the trunk is Vishnu and leaves represent Lord Shiva.

The Peepal tree is associated with Yama, the god of death and the tree is often planted outside the village
near crematoriums. The Peepal tree does not let a blade of grass grow under it signifying its nature for not allowing any rebirth and renewal.

Cutting a peepal tree is regarded as a big sin, which is almost equivalent to murdering a Brahmin.
Skanda Puranas say that a person who cuts the tree surely goes to hell.

Science behind all these beliefs are Peepal is considered to be the largest oxygen provider, along with Neem and Tulsi. It is widely known that these trees release oxygen even at night.
They can uptake carbon dio-oxide during the night as well.

If you sit under a peepal tree for 30 minutes a day, you can feel the difference. The cells in our bodies need oxygen to stay alive.
Oxygen plays a vital role in the breathing processes and in the metabolism of the living organisms.
Our body needs oxygen to break the food to provide us energy and heat.

Peepal alone exhales maximum ozone (O3) during the sunshine.
The absorption of ozone helps female fertility. The walking around makes lung do work to take in more and more fresh air that strengthens the uterus, fallopian tubes to receive sperm are also absorbed.
According to researchers, the interacting flow of wind as well as the sound of peepal leaves, kills infection bacteria slowly, providing it the antibacterial property.
