For the people saying that the Liberal candidate was not homophobic by voting against the rainbow crosswalk in Langley Township, I understand she voted against it because she wanted a framework for counsel to consider EDI initiatives and that framework wasn't in place yet.
Let me be clear: a group of non-diverse individuals establishing a framework to determine which diversity is allowed and what celebrations of diversity will be approved is gatekeeping. It is a form of oppression.
Worse still, by pointing back at the fact that they wanted to establish a framework but HAD NOT yet establish that, they are saying that there can be no celebration of diversity without that framework. That is oppression.
It is, in my firmly-held opinion, homophobic to say you cannot have a rainbow crossing until a committee of straight white people develop a framework by which your request can be considered but if a citizen wants a regular crosswalk installed, there is no special framework.
Consider as well that dozens of other cities and towns in BC have across the world have installed rainbow crosswalks with very little difficulty. It isn't a novel or unprecedented proposal.
