me rambling about six of crows and crooked kingdom because i finished last night. tweets w spoilers are tagged! tw // mentions of d*ath and v*olence
ok it was p incredible. hands down some of the best written characters I've read!! the representation in the main cast didn't really feel forced down your throat and I liked that the romance or whatever was more of a background thing most of the time

tw: mention of death

Matthias is such a well written character you can see his thought process and the emotion he feels behind every action he takes. he's a really passionate person, fiercly loyal, and driven by his allegiances so i thought his d*ath was kinda fitting

solely from a narrative standpoint (getting k*lled by the system only he could escape). Nina is closer to a regular YA heroine but her "fiestiness" and bickering flowed more naturally than I expected it to. Her character seemed a lot more genuine

every morning I get up and thank god that inej is a quiet heroine kajdfk the author stays pretty consistent with her quiet and thoughtful nature which I liked a lot. The sassy heroine is a little overdone to the point where it's a turn off now so inej was p refreshing

kaz was my least favorite character tbh. I don't hate him at all, I respect his character a lot, and I empathize with what he's been through. He's intelligent and a really complex character but MAN that unprocessed trauma.... i mean ig you can say that about a lot-

of the characters but it really shone through with him. WYLAN AND JESPER ARE SO CUTE I would sacrifice everything for them. I LOVED how the author rightfully treated Jesper's gambling addiction like the illness it is rather than a shortcoming.

and loved how she explored that in relation to him suppressing his power for a long time. I also like how Wylan didn't magically get cured of his dyslexia or something at the end

when the author wanted me to hate characters GOD i hated them like van eck sending wylan letters saying "if you're reading this" made me wanna punch a wall

so it was pretty good in a lot of aspects. however heres what i hated:

KUWEI was done SO dirty pls. this dude has been with the dregs for like 55-60% of the story line but he was so?? irrelevant?? like WHY? I feel like the author could've done SO MUCH MORE with his character than make him this 2D lowkey asshole character whose sole-

reasons for existence are getting to ravka and hitting on jesper. He was a centerpiece to the whole plotline but he was grossly underwritten. which made me go "hm so he like is almost dead but like uh idc" like pls he felt like an actual prize or a concept-
throughout most of the story. And also i feel like the author didnt need to give him chapters in the book to flesh out and develop an original and deep character. like wylan had NO chapters in the first book and i still knew a lot about him??

and then the way he was in the circle when matthias d*es felt jarring because he had little to no role in the storyline. I only saw him interact with matthias when they were escaping so it was weird when the author finally decided to include him
THESE PPL ARE MY AGE OR YOUNGER it was so jarring to read because like man i can't even do my calc homework without using 100% of my brain and kaz is popping out these insanely intricate plans?? for all purposes in my mind they are mid twenties or older.
idk if i read it too fast. or something but i think the wrap up at the end of crooked kingdom was a bit too neat too quickly. also it felt super indulgent but that's not necessarily a problem. but yea a lot of the book felt like it was building up in tension and like the-
whole scheme falling into place releases some of that but the fact that everything worked out pretty well (ofc except matthias) at the end didn't really do much to dissipate the nervous energy i still had (idk if this is a me thing)
THE YELLOWFACE?? it felt. so unnecessary throughout ck like what was it even there for? I get that he had to change his appearance at the end of the first book or whatever but like it felt super tacky when he like stayed like that for half the second book
a lot of people had a problem by the way gangs were presented as more of a "found family" than predatory and violent as they were but I didn't really feel that way? the found family thing was only really between the six of them and like they were the only teenagers present
in the novel so I don't think it showed enough to conclude that these gangs are/aren't predatory. however there is romanticization of gang life which is a little harmful and while i personally have been fortunate enough to not be affected by gang violence, I can't imagine
reading this and vibing with it as much if i had.
ok this thread got kinda long uh. it was overall really good!!!!! though not flawless in execution. The duology was really well written and theyre definitely two of my comfort novels now lmao right up there with pride and prejudice and crime and punishment. the end.
