Talking to a friend this morning and it hit me that we have these periods of political and social unrest because we refuse to teach people true history. We lean on the heavy white washed heroic version that leaves out that many of our presidents were not good men.
We continue to teach our kids to idolize men who aided with genocide, slavery, Jim crow, Internment camps, legislative practices that created the systemic racism and class issues we struggle under.
I get that especially white people want to feel like heroes and saviors. But it shouldn't take elective college courses to grasp that history is not simple, or pretty. And that many "heroes" especially in politics are highly problematic.
I love history, but when I truly delved into it, not just for our country but throughout they world. I saw the true insidious nature of how its taught. We are groomed to idolize ancient civilizations that were cruel and barbaric.
People romanticize the Victorian era when it was a poop and plague filled horror show for anyone not affluent enough. And even then death was so common because morons kept poisonous items for fashion and showing off purposes.
And dont get me started on the incestuous grossness that is many royal family lines. Yet folks are still being taught to worship these literal cousin fuckers. Yet have nothing but jokes about hillbillys and hicks...
To wrap this rant up. Teaching true history is our best defense against treating tyranny and this headfirst slide into GOP fascism. It is a way to improve yourself by not making heroes out of ordinary people. But by making yourself a better person.
I hope after this nightmare is over more people start to study and push for real history to be taught. Civics as well, but that's another rant. Thank you for reading this.
