i‘m reading white rage by carol anderson and am quickly TRULY understanding we learned nothing in grade school. if you think youve been taught the history of american racism, you are likely misled. i’m on chapter 3 and this is only SOME of what i’ve learned already:

i’ve known that american history is whitewashed, but holy shit. did any of y’all learn about ANY of this from your teachers in elementary/middle/high school?? or was the version of US history taught to you bleached for the sake of white comfort?? bc it was most likely the latter
this is truly only the surface of what i’ve been learning. i’m appalled by not only our history, but the parallels between the era of slavery and fucking 2020. it’s undeniable. but all of this has been hidden from us
we’re taught it was slavery -> jim crowe -> segregation -> equality with a lil racism sprinkled in. meanwhile i’m reading this and literally having to pause every few paragraphs just to let this shit sink in. my privilege and lack of honest education has enabled so much ignorance
i highly encourage literally every single person to read this book, but especially my white peers. it’s free on audible if you sign up with your amazon account and it’s only 6 hours long. it’s incredibly well written and to say it’s eye opening is a vast understatement
also, in the screenshots, i’d like to clarify my dad’s responses are super short bc he’s currently in front of an 8th grade class teaching algebra, not bc of apathy. he and i have regular conversations about racism and he’s going to start the book himself so we can dive deeper
if you see this thread, please read it through and PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. we have to properly educate ourselves in order to move forward and this is an INCREDIBLE place to start
